American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act Bill Hi Horsefriend, For facts about horse-slaughter, please visit http://www.savethehorses.com/faqs.html Any support is greatly appreciated! If you want more info, please visit www.habitatforhorses.org I believe in 1998, California got 750,000 signatures and banned horse slaughter in CA. Let's do it in the whole USA! For more info or to volunteer, please contact Sandy Webb at sandywebb@earthlink.net Thanks,
Here is some more info (Jerry Flinch from Habitat for Horses) AWI's companion organization, the Society for Animal Protective Legislation, together with the Doris Day Animal League, is working with Congresswoman Constance Morella (R-MD), who introduced legislation called the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (H.R. 3781), to ban the domestic and international transport of live horses or horse meat for human consumption. Those that are working with Congresswoman Morella will find that the petition voices a very strong opinion supporting the bill. CA had 750,000 signatures on their petition in 1998 to ban horse slaughter in CA. We need twice that many, plus a LOT of letters to our Representatives to get it banned in all of the US. Our biggest hurdle is making the public aware of the problem. Most people just flat out don't know. In CA they found out that, once aware, 80% of the public was against horse slaughter. They passed a very strong law, but it isn't being enforced. Horses are shipped out of CA into IL and TX for slaughter everyday. If they are stopped, the drivers simply say that they are taking the horses to a camp for trailrides. There are still three remaining US-based, foreign-owned horse slaughterhouses (two in Texas and one in Illinois) Please sign the petition and spread the word. Habitat for Horses would like to get at least 50,000 signatures by May 25th, 2002 for their Pony Express Ride to promote the bill and present the petitions to a delegation from Congress in Houston and the media. If you have already signed it, then thank you! Please forward this to your spouses, family members, friends, co-workers etc. Please help spread the word! Contact your representative and ask them to support this bill. If they are not on the Conference Committee, contact both your Senators and urge them to tell Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA), Chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee and Senator Richard Lugar (R-IN), Ranking Minority Member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, how you feel about these animal issues. Similarly, contact your Representative and urge him or her to tell Congressman Larry Combest (R-TX), Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee and Congressman Charles Stenholm (D-TX), Ranking Minority Member of the House Agriculture Committee, how you feel about these animal issues.
