(Sorry, no dogs) February 11 - 21st Annual Special Equestrians Ride-A-Thon at the Babcock Ranch in Punta Gorda, Florida, to benefit Special Equestrians, a nonprofit therapeutic horseback riding program for children and adults with disabilities in Fort Myers, Florida. Come ride with us on over 12 miles of trails on this Florida treasure, Babcock Ranch. The trails of the Babcock Ranch are rarely open to the public. Call 239-226-1221 or 239-851-7070 for information. Ten professional English riders will team up and switch horses with ten professional Western riders to compete in each other’s discipline. The Western riders will complete a timed jump course and the English riders will perform a reining pattern and work a cow, much to the delight of the audience. In the past, the riders have included Olympians and National Champions in their respective disciplines. It’s great fun to watch such accomplished riders out of their element competing in another riding style! 50% of all net proceeds will be donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Central & Northern Florida The event will be held at Ocala Equestrian Complex, 1601 SW 60th Avenue, Ocala, FL, Admission is $10 per person. The FCTA is a non-profit organization of volunteers dedicated to the mission of “Keeping History Alive”, by educating through demonstration, the Old Florida Cracker Pioneer ways of agriculture, animal husbandry, respect for the land as well as the hardships and joys of life on the original frontier. The Annual Cross-State Ride serves to preserve the importance of the role of the State of Florida in the introduction of horses and cattle by the Spanish Explorers into the New World and the birth and continuance of the cattle and horse industries by its future settlers and their descendants and to support related causes. We will begin in Bradenton, FL at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 18, and commence with a parade through Ft. Pierce on Saturday, February 25 with camping on the beach! This yearly event is attended by participants from Osceola County and the rest of Florida as well as Georgia, Alabama and many other states. The dues for participating in this year’s ride will be $95 per person for anyone 18 years or older in age, $25 per child ages 12-17, and children under 11 may participate free with a paying adult. Food packages are available at an additional cost from an independent food vendor. The Osceola County Wagon Train & Trail Ride, Inc is a corporation, not-for-profit, composed completely of volunteer members. The mission of this group is to promote the appreciation and preserve the heritage of Osceola County, FL through horsemanship, education, fellowship and reverence for the land.
