PAIR SERGIO CAMPOS AND SHAKIRA DO JACARE WIN
Ocala, FL (March 13, 2005) --
Sergio Campos raced to victory aboard his Brazilian Sport Horse Shakira Do Jacare in Thursday's $25,000 HITS Grand Prix during the final week of the HITS Ocala Winter Circuit. This was Campos' second Grand Prix win with the eight-year-old chestnut mare, the pair also won the $25,000 HITS Grand Prix during week 2.
A former bull-rider/bronco-rider, Campos turned professional in 2003 and is now enjoying a very successful show jumping career. His mare, Shakira Do Jacare, likes to give him a gentle reminder every now and again of his bronco-riding days. "She's always trying something to knock me off," laughs Campos. "I don't jump her that much at home, mostly free jumping. She tends to get a little stressed, so I like to keep her calm when she is not competing."
A total of thirty-one horse/rider combinations competed over Kenny Krome's first round course, and seven saw their way clear to advance to the jump-off.
Amy Millar, daughter of eight-time Canadian Olympian Ian Millar, was first to attempt the jump-off course. Millar piloted Costa Rica owned by Victoria Pitman Smith clear in a careful time of 39.78 seconds.
Aaron Vale set a blistering pace with Hollow Creek Investments' Ratina 79 taking five seconds off Millar's time to finish in 34.79 seconds.
The next two riders, Mary Lisa Leffler and Kylee Jo Johnson, both posted clear rounds but their times of 39.84 and 37.52 seconds respectively were no challenge to Vale.
The Brazilian pair, Sergio Campos and his mare Shakira Do Jacare, took their turn in the ring. Riding a horse that can really accelerate, Campos sailed through the course leaving all the rails up. He somehow managed to shave more than a second off Vale's time to finish with 33.73 seconds on the clock. With Aaron Vale following up on his second mount Sea Cloud, winner of the $25,000 HITS Grand Prix in week IV, Campos was not celebrating yet.
Vale and Sea Cloud owned by Andrea King ended up with eight faults.
Callan Solem was the last to challenge Campos. Riding Mianta owned by Quiet Winter Farm/Redfield Farm, Solem had three knockdowns.
Sergio Campos took the win in the $25,000 HITS Grand Prix aboard Shakira Do Jacare. He also placed ninth in the competition aboard Cowboy, owned by Rodrigo Pessoa. Aaron Vale and Ratina 79 placed second. Kylee Jo Johnson and Landintendant placed third. Amy Millar and Costa Rica took fourth place.
